Anterior/Posterior Lumbar Fusion 360

If you’re experiencing severe back pain, caused by degenerative disc disease, then an anterior/posterior lumbar fusion 360 may be the appropriate treatment option for you.

What Is Anterior/Posterior Lumbar Fusion 360?

Anterior/posterior lumbar fusion 360 (ALIF) is generally used to treat back or leg pain caused by compressed, slipped, or bulging spinal discs caused by degenerative disc disease.

Dr. Callewart will stabilize the spine by fusing vertebrae at the front and the back of your spine together with bone graft material.

Why Is Anterior/Posterior Lumbar Fusion 360 Performed?

When a patient is suffering from degenerative disc disease, certain movements may cause or worsen their pain by forcing the disc to compress further, pinching their spinal nerve roots.

An ALIF procedure is performed to limit or prevent the movement, reducing the pain caused.

How Is Anterior/Posterior Lumbar Fusion 360 Performed?

The Anterior/Posterior Lumbar Fusion is performed under general anesthesia and consists of Dr. Callewart making an incision typically in your lower abdomen. From there, he will fuse your front and back vertebrae together using a bone graft.

This procedure can take up to 7 hours, and patients will typically be placed in a recovery room for 1 to 2 days.

What Should I Expect After Anterior/Posterior Lumbar Fusion 360?

After surgery, patients may experience soreness and stiffness – painkillers will be given during the recovery period.

Full recovery takes up to 12 weeks, and during this time, x-rays may be taken to ensure the fusion is healing as expected.

Frequently Asked Questions About Anterior/Posterior Lumbar Fusion 360

1. Is ALIF a serious surgery?
While the recovery time is long and daily activities will be limited during those first 12 weeks, the surgery is minimally invasive.

2. Will ALIF leave scars?
Yes. The surgery requires deep incisions on your abdomen (and sometimes your back) to enable access to your spine. These incisions will leave scars, but they can fade over time.

Are You In Pain?

Most patients experiencing pain can be seen by Dr. Callewart or his physician assistant within 24 hours in Dallas, Forney, Rockwall and Addison, Texas.
