Is Neck Pain Causing My Headaches?

Is Neck Pain Causing My Headaches?

Headaches have many potential root causes and can be complex. Headaches can be due to lifestyle choices such as diet, sleep habits and obesity. They may also be caused by medications, stress and high blood pressure to name a few. Some headaches can be more serious and caused by medical conditions such a stroke or aneurysm. If you are experiencing a new severe headache you should have it evaluated by a medical provider promptly.

Headaches can also be directly related to neck pain.  Neck pain caused by poor posture, injury, or conditions such as a pinched nerve or disc herniation can irritate nerves in the spine and cause muscle tension that travels up the neck and to the head. These types of headaches are often referred to as cervicogenic headaches. If you think your headache may be from neck pain then consider what could be the cause of your neck pain. For example, if you sit at a computer for long periods of time consider having an ergonomic evaluation at work to ensure your posture is correct. If you have sustained a whiplash injury, you may benefit from anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxers and physical therapy. A massage can also be helpful for muscle spasms in the neck. Alternating ice and heat may be beneficial in helping to relax muscles and decrease inflammation.

If your headaches persist, you should be evaluated by a medical provider to determine if you have a pinched nerve or herniated disc. These etiologies can be treated with medications, injections and/or decompression therapy. Most headaches caused by neck pain will respond well to these conservative treatments. Sometimes persistent headaches caused by neck pain can be debilitating and ultimately require surgery. Headaches can be complex at times to treat so it is important that you see a medical provider to have your headaches evaluated in order to determine the primary cause and the best treatment for you.
