Epidural Injections

Experiencing chronic low back pain, caused by inflammation?

An epidural injection may be right for you. This outpatient procedure, performed at the office of Craig C. Callewart, M.D., P.A., is an injection of a steroid-anesthetic medication in the epidural space in your spine. The medication can reduce swelling and inflammation of irritated spinal nerves.

What Is An Epidural Injection?

Epidural corticosteroid injections are anti-inflammatory and relieve pain in the neck, shoulders, and arms caused by pinched nerve roots in the cervical spine.

It’s typically an outpatient procedure that can take just minutes to complete and can reduce pain almost immediately.

Why Are Epidural Injections Performed?

The reason for this treatment is simple – some medical conditions, such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or radiculopathy, can compress nerves which causes inflammation and pain that can limit your mobility.

This epidural injection procedure helps decrease the swelling of nerves, reducing pain and enabling a full range of motion.

How Are Epidural Injections Performed?

A lumbar epidural steroid injection is performed under local anesthetic, where the doctor will insert a needle into the injection site. This is the epidural space, also known as a gap in the sacrum – one of the bones at the base of your spinal cord.

The injection takes minutes to complete.

What Should I Expect After An Epidural Injection?

After you have received an epidural injection, most patients report feeling a reduction in their pain almost immediately.

There may be some bruising at the injection site, but this is to be expected and will go down within a week of the procedure. While the pain is relieved, patients are advised to limit heavy lifting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Epidural Injections

1. Do epidural injections hurt?
This kind of injection is typically given after a local anesthetic is given, so while there may be a mild discomfort of pressure, you should not feel pain.

2. Can you walk after an epidural injection?
Most patients can walk around thirty minutes after the injection – but you’ll be monitored by a doctor or nurse until approximately an hour after the injection to ensure you feel comfortable.

Are You In Pain?

Most patients experiencing pain can be seen by Dr. Callewart or his physician assistant within 24 hours in Dallas, Forney, Rockwall and Addison, Texas.
