Facet Joint Injections

The facet joints, found on both sides of the back of the spine, can become painfully irritated and inflamed.

A facet joint injection may help diagnose the source of a patient’s pain, for further treatment, while also helping to relieve pain and inflammation.

What Is A Facet Joint Injection?

A facet joint injection is what it sounds like – it is an injection of a local anesthetic and a steroid or anti-inflammatory medicine.

It’s injected into one of your facet joints, which are the connectors between your bone and nerve roots. This helps us, here at the offices of Craig C. Callewart, M.D., P.A., to efficiently identify the source of your pain while acting as a pain reliever.

Why Are Facet Joint Injections Performed?

When you develop back pain, there’s typically one specific injury causing it. Unfortunately though, finding the location of that injury is not always simple. This injection contains numbing medicine, and so it enables us to target and numb based on a physical assessment to confirm the source of pain.

This also works as pain relief when the location is confirmed.

How Are Facet Joint Injections Performed?

Facet joint injections are outpatient procedures that typically take less than 20 minutes to complete. A mix of numbing medicine and a steroid is injected in the facet joint area that we believe to be causing your chronic back pain.

From there, Dr. Callewart will discuss how you feel, to determine if it has reduced your pain.

What Should I Expect After A Facet Joint Injection?

As far as what you can expect, the exact details will depend on whether or not the injection has targeted the source of your pain or not.

Typically though, there are limited to no side effects – with slight bruising at the injection site possible.
